Eleanor Roosevelt. Hippiekulturen i 6. Odd Anders With.

In clinical contexts, it typically refers to mental health diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and delusional disorder, and often is called severe (or serious) and persistent mental illness. In research and prevalence data the term may carry the same meaning as described or simply refer to any mental health condition that significantly impairs functioning. For this brief’s purposes, the clinical use will apply. The group of SMI diagnoses share psychosis as a primary symptom, including hallucinations, delusions, distorted thinking, disordered behavior and/or speech, and exaggerated mood. With limited data available, best estimates of prevalence indicate under 1% of older adults have bipolar disorder and roughly 1% have schizophrenia. The symptoms can be challenging to treat, and most medications found to be effective have unpleasant side effects and in fact range in their effectiveness; therefore medication compliance is challenging. Older adults treated for these conditions earlier in life may continue to experience physical and cognitive side effects from treatment options available at that time. Because SMI can prevent individuals from maintaining employment in their adult years, poverty is a common concern and some older adults have limited Medicare benefits due to an insufficient work history. Unfortunately, many older adults with SMI live in nursing home settings due to the impact of symptoms, finances, and lack of long- term, comprehensive, community- based mental health services that offer team- based behavioral interventions, such as Assertive Community Treatment programs. Research on SMI and older adulthood is limited and the field has much to learn to better understand prevalence and unique factors. Though prevalence of these conditions in older adulthood appears low, grantmakers may be interested in this population due to the frequent high need for specialized community- based services in order to reduce institutionalization and related systemic costs. Training programs for all levels of nursing home staff to improve quality of care may also be of interest. Grantmakers interested in community housing may also wish to consider funding programs related to these diagnoses, as safe, affordable housing that provides or partners with mental health services is a significant need. Symptoms of Kidney stones - Right. Diagnosis. com. Symptoms of Kidney stones: Introduction. Small kidney stones or kidney stones that remain in the kidney may produce no symptoms. A small kidney stone may pass in the urine out of the body without causing pain or visible blood in the urine. However, when a large kidney stone moves out of the kidney into the ureter it causes severe sharp, stabbing pain in the flank area on the same side of the lower back as the location of the underlying stone. This is called renal colic. Renal colic often comes in waves of very intense pain that can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. As the kidney stone moves down the ureter toward the bladder, the pain moves from the flank area to the lower abdominal area and into the groin. Pain may also radiate into the testicles or the labia. If the kidney stone is able to pass into the bladder, the pain generally resolves. Once in the bladder, a kidney stone generally is able to pass move easily out of the bladder into the urethra and out of the body in the urine. If a kidney stone becomes lodged in the ureter, it can block the flow of urine from the kidney resulting in dysuria (difficulty urinating) and potentially serious, even life- threatening complications in some people. These include kidney infection, sepsis, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, hydronephrosis, kidney damage, and kidney failure.. · How to Get Rid of Hiccups When You Are Drunk. Kidney stones symptoms. Kidney Stones: Types, Testing, & Treatment What Are Kidney Stones? Kidney stones, or renal calculi, are solid masses made of crystals. Kidney stones usually originate in your kidneys, but can develop anywhere along your urinary tract. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Kidney stones are known to be one of the most painful medical conditions. The causes of kidney stones vary according to the type of stone. Types Types of Kidney Stones. Not all kidney stones are made up of the same crystals. The different types of kidney stones include: Calcium. Calcium stones are the most common. They can be made of calcium oxalate (most common), phosphate, or maleate. Eating fewer oxalate- rich foods can reduce your risk of developing this type of stone. High- oxalate foods include potato chips, peanuts, chocolate, beets, and spinach. Uric Acid This type of kidney stone is more common in men than in women. They can occur in people with gout or those going through chemotherapy. This type of stone develops when urine is too acidic. A diet rich in purines can increase urine’s acidic level. Purine is a colorless substance in animal proteins, such as fish, shellfish, and meats. Struvite. This type of stone is found mostly in women with urinary tract infections. These stones can be large and cause urinary obstruction. These stones are caused by a kidney infection. Treating an underlying infection can prevent the development of struvite stones. Cystine. Cystine stones are rare. They occur in both men and women who have the genetic disorder cystinuria. With this type of stone, cystine — an acid that occurs naturally in the body — leaks from the kidneys into the urine. Risk Factors Risk Factors for Kidney Stones. The greatest risk factor for kidney stones is making less than one liter of urine per day. This is why kidney stones are common in premature infants who have kidney problems. Kidney stones are most likely to occur between the ages of 2. Different factors can increase your risk of developing a stone. Typically, Caucasians are more likely to have kidney stones than African Americans. Sex also plays a role, with more men than women developing kidney stones, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). A history of kidney stones can increase your risk, as does a family history of kidney stones. Other risk factors include: dehydration obesityhigh- protein, salt, or glucose diethyperparathyroid conditiongastric bypass surgeryinflammatory bowel diseases that increase calcium absorptiontaking medications such as diuretics, anti- seizure drugs, and calcium- based antacids. Symptoms Recognizing the Symptoms and Signs of a Kidney Stone. Kidney stones are known to cause severe pain. Symptoms of kidney stones may not occur until the stone begins to move down the ureters. This severe pain is called renal colic. You may have pain on one side of your back or abdomen. In men, pain may radiate to the groin area. The pain of renal colic comes and goes, but can be intense. People with renal colic tend to be restless. Other symptoms of kidney stones can include: blood in the urine (red, pink, or brown urine)vomitingnauseadiscolored or foul- smelling urinechillsfeverfrequent need to urinateurinating small amounts of urine. In the case of a small kidney stone, you may not have any pain or symptoms as the stone passes through your urinary tract. Complications Why Kidney Stones Can Be a Problem. Stones don’t always stay in the kidney. Sometimes, they pass from the kidney into the ureters. Ureters are small and delicate, and the stones may be too large to pass smoothly down the ureter to the bladder. Passage of stones down the ureter can cause spasms and irritation of the ureters as they pass, which causes blood to appear in the urine. Sometimes stones block the flow of urine. This is called a urinary obstruction. Urinary obstructions can lead to kidney infection (pyelonephritis) and kidney damage. Diagnosis Testing for and Diagnosing Kidney Stones. Diagnosis of kidney stones requires a complete health history assessment and a physical exam. Other tests include: blood tests for calcium, phosphorus, uric acid, and electrolytesblood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine to assess kidney functioningurinalysis to check for crystals, bacteria, blood, and white cellsexamination of passed stones to determine type The following tests can rule out obstruction: abdominal X- raysintravenous pyelogram (IVP)retrograde pyelogramultrasound of the kidney (this is the preferred study)MRI of the abdomen and kidneysabdominal CT scan. Find a Doctor. Treatment How Kidney Stones Are Treated. Treatment is tailored according to the type of stone. Urine can be strained and stones collected for evaluation. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day increases urine flow. People who are dehydrated or have severe nausea and vomiting may need intravenous fluids. Other treatment options include: Medication. Pain relief may require narcotic medications. The presence of infection requires treatment with antibiotics. Other medications include: allopurinol for uric acid stonesdiureticssodium bicarbonate or sodium citratephosphorus solutions. Lithotripsy. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy uses sound waves to break up large stones so they can more easily pass down the ureters into your bladder. This procedure can be uncomfortable and may require light anesthesia. It can cause bruising on the abdomen and back and bleeding around the kidney and nearby organs. Tunnel Surgery (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy)Stones are removed through a small incision in your back and may be needed when: the stone causes obstruction and infection or is damaging the kidneysthe stone has grown too large to passpain cannot be controlled. Ureteroscopy. When a stone is stuck in the ureter or bladder, your doctor may use an instrument called a ureteroscope to remove it. A small wire with a camera attached is inserted into the urethra and passed into the bladder. A small cage is used to snag the stone and remove it. The stone is then sent to the laboratory for analysis. Prevention Kidney Stone Prevention. Proper hydration is a key preventive measure. Johns Hopkins Medicine recommends drinking up to 1. Drinking more fluids increases the amount of urine you pass, which helps flush the kidneys. The Mayo Clinic recommends passing 2. You can substitute some glasses of water with ginger ale, lemon- lime soda, and fruit juice. Eating oxalate- rich foods in moderation and reducing your intake of salt and animal proteins can also lower your risk of kidney stones. Your doctor may prescribe medications to help prevent the formation of calcium and uric acid stones. If you’ve had a kidney stone, or you’re at risk for a kidney stone, speak with your doctor and discuss the best methods of prevention. Bloating - Wikipedia. Bloat is any abnormal gas swelling, or increase in diameter of the abdominal area. As a symptom, the patient feels a full and tight abdomen, which may cause abdominal pain and is sometimes accompanied by increased stomach growling, or more seriously, the total lack of it. Symptoms[edit]The most common symptom associated with bloating is a sensation that the abdomen is full or distended. Rarely, bloating may be painful or cause shortness of breath. Pains that are due to bloating will feel sharp and cause the stomach to cramp. These pains may occur anywhere in the body and can change locations quickly.[2] They are so painful that they are sometimes mistaken for heart pains when they develop on the upper left side of the chest. Pains on the right side are often confused with problems in the appendix or the gallbladder. One symptom of gas that is not normally associated with it is the hiccup. Hiccups are harmless and will diminish on their own; they also help to release gas that is in the digestive tract before it moves down to the intestines and causes bloating. Important but uncommon causes of abdominal bloating include ascites and tumors.[3]There are many causes of bloating, including: diet, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, reflux, and constipation. Specific medical conditions like Crohn's disease or bowel obstruction can also contribute to the amount of stomach bloating experienced. Common causes of abdominal bloating are: Important but uncommon causes of abdominal bloating include: In animals, causes of abdominal bloating include: Gastric dilatation volvulus, a condition of dogs which occurs when gas is trapped inside the stomach and gastric torsion prevents it from escaping. Ruminal tympany, a condition of ruminant animals which occurs when gas cannot escape from the rumen. Irritable bowel syndrome[edit]Bloating from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is of unknown origin but often results from an insult to the gut, and as such can overlap with infective diarrhea, celiac, and inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). IBS is a brain- gut dysfunction that causes visceral hypersensitivity and results in bloating in association with recurrent diarrhea (or constipation) and abdominal pain. While there is no direct treatment for the underlying pathology of IBS, the symptom of bloating can be well managed through dietary changes that prevent the over- reaction of the gastrocolic reflex. Having soluble fiber foods and supplements, substituting dairy with soy or rice products, being careful with fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in insoluble fiber, and eating regular small amounts can all help to lessen the symptoms of IBS (Van Vorous 2. Foods and beverages to be avoided or minimized include red meat, oily, fatty and fried products, dairy (even when there is no lactose intolerance), solid chocolate, coffee (regular and decaffeinated), alcohol, carbonated beverages, especially those also containing sorbitol, and artificial sweeteners (Van Vorous 2. IBS is most commonly found in patients around the age of 2. In people with IBS, the intestines squeeze too hard or not hard enough and cause food to move too quickly or too slowly through the intestines.[4] Other terms used to describe this condition include spastic bowel, spastic colon, and irritable colon. Symptoms of the condition will worsen as a person is placed under stress, during travel, and at other times when the daily routine is tampered with. Common symptoms include bloating, constipation, abdominal cramp or pain after bowel movement, or feeling like a movement is required even after one has been completed. Most cases of stomach bloating are due to improper diet.[medical citation needed] Gas occurs because of the bacteria in the colon and is a by- product of soluble fiber digestion. Inadequate or irregular intake of fiber and water will cause a person to experience bloating or constipation. The most common natural sources of fiber include fruits and vegetables as well as wheat or oat bran. These fibers are most likely to cause flatulence.[5] Fiber is made by plants and is not easily digested by the human gastrointestinal tract. There are two main types of dietary fiber: soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is prebiotic and readily fermented in the colon into gases, while insoluble fiber is metabolically inert and absorbs water as it moves through the digestive system, aiding in defecation. Most types of fiber (insoluble) are attached to body water in the intestine and increase the volume of stools. Belching and flatulence[edit]Gas in the gastrointestinal tract has only two sources. It is either swallowed air or is produced by bacteria that normally inhabit the intestines, primarily the colon.[6]Belching or burping is a universal ability that works by removing gas from the stomach through the mouth. The stomach can become bloated when too much air is swallowed during eating and drinking too quickly. As the stomach swells, belching removes the gas and alleviates the pain associated with it. Burping can also be used as a form of relief from abdominal discomfort other than too much gas in the stomach. Flatulence or farting works much like burping, but helps the body pass gas through the anus instead of the mouth. Bacteria present in the intestinal tract cause gas to be expelled from the anus. They produce the gas as food is digested and moved from the small intestine. This gas builds up and causes swelling or bloating in the abdominal area before it is released. Constipation[edit]A common gastrointestinal problem is constipation—infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, or strain during the movements—which causes serious cases of bloating. Since most cases of constipation are temporary, simple lifestyle changes, such as getting more exercise and increasing one's intake of fiber, can go a long way toward alleviating constipation.[7] Some cases of constipation will continue to worsen and require unconventional methods to release the feces and reduce the amount of stomach bloating. Blood in the stool, intense pain in the abdomen, rectal pain, and unexplained weight loss should be reported to a doctor. Bloating consistently accompanies constipation, and they will not develop without an underlying cause. Heartburn and acid reflux[edit]Painful burning sensations in the chest that is caused by gastroesophageal reflux is known as heartburn. Reflux is the back flow of gastric acid juices from the stomach into the oesophagus. Heartburn has different triggers, including certain foods, medications, obesity, and stress. These triggers are different for each individual. Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a chronic condition that can lead to more serious complications like esophageal cancer. Treatment options are available to treat the symptoms and the condition, but there is no cure for the disease. Symptoms include burping, abdominal and stomach bloating, along with pain and discomfort. Heavy meals, lying down or bending over after eating should be avoided to help prevent reflux from occurring. The stomach bloating experienced with reflux is intense and will remain until the food is digested all the way. Postmortem bloating occurs in cadavers, due to the formation of gases by bacterial action and putrefaction of the internal tissues of the abdomen and the inside of the intestines. Related conditions[edit]Conditions that are related to bloating include constipation, lactose intolerance, and acid reflux disease. All of these conditions share the same symptoms and can share the same causative agents. These causes include unhealthy diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, low amount of exercise, and overall health. Each of these conditions can be experienced as a symptom of the others and is also a cause for each of them. In most cases where one of the conditions is present, there is at least one if not two of the others. Treatment for each condition is performed using the same medications and recommended dietary changes like increased fiber intake and reduced fat intake. If the conditions develop into disease such as gastroesophageal reflux disease or chronic constipation, additional medications will be required. Bloating and flatulence are sometimes related to constipation, and treating the underlying condition may be helpful.[8]Treatment[edit]There are many over- the- counter (OTC) medications that can be used to treat bloating. Food enzymes can be found in some products that will help break down the sugars found in grains, vegetables and dairy products. They can be taken before food is consumed or added to the food that causes the gas and bloating. Another type of medicine is activated charcoal tablets which decrease the odor from gas. The most common treatment is antacids. These medications have no effect on the gas that is presently in the intestines, but enable gas build- up to be belched away more easily, reducing the amount of bloating that develops. Another treatment is Simethicone, an oral anti- foaming agent that helps the body to expel the gas more quickly. Also combinations of prokinetics, such as domperidone + metoclopramide + diphenhydramine (the latter for the prevention of extrapyramidal reactions, especially acute dystonic reactions) + proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), have dramatic effects on bloaters and belchers especially. Lifestyle changes[edit]There are several things that can be done to relieve the pressure in the stomach. Taking a walk after eating a meal is a good way to nudge the contents of the bowels along. Exercising releases hormones that work to encourage activity in the bowels. Foods like bubble gum or bubbly beverages also cause a build- up of air that results in excessive gas and bloating, as does smoking. There are also certain types of vegetables and fruits that contain types of starches which are poorly digested by people but well digested by bacteria. How to Teach Conversational English: 9 Best Practices. And while the conversation class may certainly be less rigorous than, for example, an advanced writing class, it has its own set of problems. In a writing class, I know what the students need, and the title “Advanced ESL Composition” alone suggests the curriculum: course readings and several student essays on related topics over the course of the semester, in drafts increasing polished and focused on structure, grammar, and punctuation. A conversation class, however, is less defined. What exactly is a conversation class? What is the curriculum? Sometimes there’s not even a course text available. Despite this initial lack of clarity, however, there are general principles of best practice that a conversation class can be built around. Focus on communication and fluency, not correctness. Lesson plans, activities and practical articles for English language teachers of adults. I’m always surprised when in the first days of class students turned to me or ask their classmates if they are holding the conversation “correctly,” if it is “right.” Rarely even in our native languages do we concern ourselves if the conversation is proceeding “correctly”; the point is if our meaning is coming through. This is what should be emphasized to students: it’s not a matter of “right” but whether or not your classmates understand you and can respond to you! Lay the groundwork. Before entering in academic conversations, students have to agree on some basic “rules for engagement”: listening to each other courteously; listening actively by clarifying meaning and asking for examples; advancing one’s own opinions clearly and politely while considering the audience, etc. Most students will really know these rules already from their first languages—there are probably some cultural universals in politeness—and can usually help in brainstorming five or so rules to be displayed prominently in the class. More than five will likely be too many to focus on and be useful. Student directed: student choice of topics. There are few things more uncomfortable than being in a conversation on a topic you either intensely dislike or have nothing to say on. Most native speakers will excuse themselves from such conversations as soon as possible. Teachers should be wary of assigning controversial topics such as the legality of abortion or same sex marriage without gauging the climate of the class and having an idea of how receptive students will be to such topics. Some classes are perfectly capable of holding a mature conversation on these topics, others not depending on their language and cross- cultural and interpersonal skills. Teachers should ask themselves the following: Are my students capable of listening to their peers on the topic without erupting in anger? Can they advance their own opinions without undue embarrassment? One way around this concern is allowing students to come up with their own topics to use over the course of the term. Have them work in groups, write agreed- upon topics on index cards, and collect them. They do not have to be “academic” topics like the validity of global warming but almost anything students are interested in and can discuss for an extended time, such as favorite music. One class session or part of one in brainstorming topics will likely yield enough topics for the term, and the instructor can just draw an index card to use during discussion time. Small group/pair work. Conversation occurs in small, not large groups. Having students work in small groups or pairs is usually more productive for a number of reasons: students are less self- conscious if they are “performing” in front of a small group rather than large, and they have more chance to speak in a smaller group. In addition, conversations generally occur in smaller groups, as any party or meeting will demonstrate—people gather in small groups to talk when given the opportunity. Setting aside regular time for students to get into groups for discussion will help them develop their conversation skills. Encourage students to rotate partners. Some teachers assign conversational partners or groups for the term, and this has advantages, such as students get to know each other better this way, and they can quickly get into their groups when asked to, easing transitions. However, there also are advantages to occasionally rotating partners or groups, perhaps every few weeks. In this way, students get to know more of their peers and get exposed to more ideas while still having the structure provided by having a stable group for a period of time. Teach students strategies. Too often conversations even between native speakers fall flat because the participants don’t know conversation strategies. In addition, there is a difference between an everyday conversation and an academic conversation. Many if not all of our students can carry on an everyday conversation without much difficulty: “What would you like for dinner?” “I dunno. Pizza? Chicken? What do you want?” Much of our day- to- day “conversation” goes on in exchanges like this and requires few strategies. But to have a real “conversation” on the topic of food choices, for example, the conversational partners will have to know different strategies for introducing the topic, drawing each other out, asking for opinions, advancing their own, using examples, and so forth. Teach vocabulary. It seems elementary, but it is often forgotten that students may not be participating because they simply don’t have the vocabulary to enter a specific conversation. Introducing some key phrases and words related to the topic will help this. For example, on the topic of different types of vacations today, students should learn words like “condo,” “time share,” “hotel,” “motel,” “extended stay,” “business class,” and “coach.”Teach both formal and informal conversation skills. There are specific strategies for entering, extending, and ending conversations both formally and informally. For example, with “Hey, Diana! How was your vacation to Hawaii?” I am signaling to Diana that I’d like to open an informal and probably brief conversation on the topic of her vacation that might extend a little into my vacation and vacations in general. However, with “What do you think about how we vacation today? Hasn’t it changed quite a bit from even ten years ago?” I am signaling a different kind of conversation—more in- depth and analytical as the conversation participants consider different types of vacations, and more academic. Knowing these strategies for different types of conversations will help students avoid confusion and even annoyance and gain experience in different types of conversations. Grade on degree of participation and understanding of conversation. Assess informally. Because the focus of instruction, and of conversation itself, is on communicating meaning rather than on correctness, students should be assessed mostly informally. The instructor can walk around the class, sit in on conversations, and get an idea this way on the degree of participation of each student. Students can also be asked to hold a conversation in front of the teacher or class and be assessed by a rubric on the degree of responding to and advancing topics, on use of strategies and vocabulary, and so forth. Finally, more formal quizzes and tests can also be given in the form of listening to taped conversations and answering questions about topic, vocabulary, responses, strategies, and so on. However, keeping in mind such strategies as preteaching vocabulary, establishing small groups, and teaching conversational strategies, there is plenty to teach and do in the conversation class! How to Teach English As a Second Language to Beginners. This scenario is unrealistic to learn to speak English in a month. Teach them in the same way we speak to children learning to speak. Present objects, saying the name of the object clearly. Have them repeat the word. Then, give the object to them, saying "I give you the _____". Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood.[1] Signs and symptoms vary among people.[1] Often, symptoms include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and tremors.[1] There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing, and speaking.[1] Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl, or walk as early as other children of their age.[1] Other symptoms include seizures and problems with thinking or reasoning, each of which occurs in about one third of people with CP.[1] While the symptoms may get more noticeable over the first few years of life, the underlying problems do not worsen over time.[1]Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance and posture.[1][3] Most often the problems occur during pregnancy; however, they may also occur during childbirth, or shortly after birth.[1] Often the cause is unknown.[1] Risk factors include preterm birth, being a twin, certain infections during pregnancy such as toxoplasmosis or rubella, exposure to methylmercury during pregnancy, a difficult delivery, and head trauma during the first few years of life, among others.[1] About 2% of cases are believed to be due to an inherited genetic cause.[4] A number of sub- types are classified based on the specific problems present.[1] For example, those with stiff muscles have spastic cerebral palsy, those with poor coordination have ataxic cerebral palsy, and those with writhing movements have athetoid cerebral palsy.[1] Diagnosis is based on the child's development over time.[1] Blood tests and medical imaging may be used to rule out other possible causes.[1]CP is partly preventable through immunization of the mother and efforts to prevent head injuries in children such as through improved safety.[1] There is no cure for CP; however, supportive treatments, medications, and surgery may help many individuals.[1] This may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.[1] Medications such as diazepam, baclofen, and botulinum toxin may help relax stiff muscles.[1] Surgery may include lengthening muscles and cutting overly active nerves.[1] Often external braces and other assistive technology are helpful.[1] Some affected children can achieve near normal adult lives with appropriate treatment.[1] While alternative medicines are frequently used there is no evidence to support their use.[1]CP is the most common movement disorder in children.[5] It occurs in about 2. Cerebral palsy has been documented throughout history with the first known descriptions occurring in the work of Hippocrates in the 5th century BCE. Extensive study of the condition began in the 1. William John Little, after whom spastic diplegia was called "Little disease".[6]William Osler first named it "cerebral palsy" from the German "zerebrale Kinderlähmung" (cerebral child- paralysis).[7] A number of potential treatments are being examined, including stem cell therapy.[1] However, more research is required to determine if it is effective and safe.[1]. Video explanation covering the three primary categories of cerebral palsy—spastic, dyskinetic, and ataxic. Signs and symptoms[edit]Cerebral palsy is defined as "a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation, that are attributed to non- progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain."[8] While the central feature of CP is a disorder with movement, difficulties with thinking, learning, feeling, communication and behavior often occur along with cerebral palsy.[8] Of those with CP, 2. Cerebral palsy is characterized by abnormal muscle tone, reflexes, or motor development and coordination. There can be joint and bone deformities and contractures (permanently fixed, tight muscles and joints). The classical symptoms are spasticity, spasms, other involuntary movements (e. Scissor walking (where the knees come in and cross) and toe walking (which can contribute to a gait reminiscent of a marionette) are common among people with CP who are able to walk, but taken on the whole, CP symptomatology is very diverse. The effects of cerebral palsy fall on a continuum of motor dysfunction, which may range from slight clumsiness at the mild end of the spectrum to impairments so severe that they render coordinated movement virtually impossible at the other end of the spectrum.[citation needed]Most people with CP have problems with high muscle tone, although some have normal or low muscle tone. High muscle tone can either be due to spasticity or dystonia.[1. Babies born with severe CP often have an irregular posture; their bodies may be either very floppy or very stiff. Birth defects, such as spinal curvature, a small jawbone, or a small head sometimes occur along with CP. Symptoms may appear or change as a child gets older. Some babies born with CP do not show obvious signs right away.[1. Classically, CP becomes evident when the baby reaches the developmental stage at 6 to 9 months and is starting to mobilise, where preferential use of limbs, asymmetry, or gross motor developmental delay is seen.[1. Drooling is common among children with cerebral palsy, which can have a variety of impacts including social rejection, impaired speaking, damage to clothing and books, and mouth infections.[1. An average of 5. 5. Those with voiding issues and pelvic floor overactivity can deteriorate as adults and experience upper urinary tract dysfunction.[1. Children with CP may also have sensory processing issues.[1. Language[edit]Speech and language disorders are common in people with cerebral palsy. The incidence of dysarthria is estimated to range from 3. CP are non- verbal.[1. Speech problems are associated with poor respiratory control, laryngeal and velopharyngeal dysfunction, and oral articulation disorders that are due to restricted movement in the oral- facial muscles. There are three major types of dysarthria in cerebral palsy: spastic, dyskinetic (athetosis), and ataxic.[1. Early use of augmentative and alternative communication systems may assist the child in developing spoken language skills.[1. Overall language delay is associated with problems of intellectual disability, deafness, and learned helplessness.[1. Children with cerebral palsy are at risk of learned helplessness and becoming passive communicators, initiating little communication.[1. Early intervention with this clientele, and their parents, often targets situations in which children communicate with others so that they learn that they can control people and objects in their environment through this communication, including making choices, decisions, and mistakes.[1. Skeleton[edit]In order for bones to attain their normal shape and size, they require the stresses from normal musculature. Osseous findings will, therefore, mirror the specific muscular deficits in a given person with CP. The shafts of the bones are often thin (gracile) and become thinner during growth. When compared to these thin shafts (diaphyses), the centres (metaphyses) often appear quite enlarged (ballooning). With a lack of use, articular cartilage may atrophy, leading to narrowed joint spaces. Depending on the degree of spasticity, a person with CP may exhibit a variety of angular joint deformities. Because vertebral bodies need vertical gravitational loading forces to develop properly, spasticity and an abnormal gait can hinder proper or full bone and skeletal development. People with CP tend to be shorter in height than the average person because their bones are not allowed to grow to their full potential. Sometimes bones grow to different lengths, so the person may have one leg longer than the other.[citation needed]Children may develop scoliosis before the age of 1. CP is between 2. 1% and 6. Higher levels of impairment on the GMFCS are associated with scoliosis.[2. Scoliosis can be corrected with surgery, but CP makes surgical complications more likely, even with improved techniques.[2. Growth spurts during puberty can make walking more difficult.[2. Pain and sleep[edit]Pain is common and may result from the inherent deficits associated with the condition, along with the numerous procedures children typically face.[2. Pain is associated with tight or shortened muscles, abnormal posture, stiff joints, unsuitable orthosis, etc. There is also a high likelihood of chronic sleep disorders secondary to both physical and environmental factors.[2. Children with cerebral palsy have significantly higher rates of sleep disturbance than typically developing children.[2. Babies with cerebral palsy who have stiffness issues might cry more and be harder to put to sleep than non- disabled babies, or "floppy" babies might be lethargic.[2. Chronic pain is under- recognized in children with cerebral palsy,[2. Those with CP may have difficulty preparing food, holding utensils, or chewing and swallowing due to sensory and motor impairments. An infant with CP may not be able to suck, swallow or chew.[2. Children with CP may have too little or too much sensitivity around and in the mouth.[2. Cerebral Palsy Residential Homes. |
